First Kazuo Ohno Modern Dance Recital | Kyoritsu Kodo Hall

Kazuo Ohno's first recital, independent of Takaya Eguchi and Misako Miya. A total of 11 pieces were performed, including solos by Kazuo Ohno and group performances by his modern dance students, inspired by Rilke's poetry, the Psalms and Max Ernst among others.
Kazuo Ohno joined Takaya Eguchi and Misako Miya's Dance Studio in 1936, but was drafted into the army in 1938. On his return to Japan in 1946 after serving as a POW, he returned to the Eguchi-Miya Dance Studio to continue his studies. When he held this first recital, Kazuo Ohno was 43 years old, and was featured in the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper as a "unique newcomer".
On seeing this "wonderful dance performance, overflowing with lyricism, by a man wearing a chemise", Tatsumi Hijikata wrote, "for years this drug dance stayed in my memory. That dance has now been transformed into a deadly poison, and one spoonful of it contains all that is needed to paralyze me" (from Tatsumi Hijikata's 1960 DANCE EXPERIENCE programme, "Inner Material/Material"*)**.
