Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio

Kazuo Ohno established the Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio in 1949, and held the first Kazuo Ohno modern dance recital at Kanda Kyoritsu Kodo hall in Tokyo. At first, rehearsals were held in the gymnasium of Soshin Girl's School, where he was working as a PE teacher.

The Kamihoshikawa studio was first built in 1961 in Hodogaya, Yokohama, and became the main centre of Kazuo Ohno's creative process and rehearsals. The 99 square metre single storey studio is built out of wood, and its walls and ceiling are painted white. Discarded wood from Soshin Girl's School was used to built the original floor and window frames. The floor was renewed in the summer of 1983.

The Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio has been a focal point for creation since its establishment, where both Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno, other butoh dancers and all kinds of artists have gathered and explored their art. It has conducted a variety of creations, including performances, workshops and publications, initiating developments of the world’s culture.
