First Flower of the Linden菩提樹の初花が
A solo piece by Kazuo Ohno presented during Part One of the First Kazuo Ohno Modern Dance Recital, which took place on 27 November 1949. It is based on a poem by Rilke, which was quoted in the programme*.
According to Yoshito Ohno, it was likely this piece that Tatsumi Hijikata was referring to when he wrote "I saw a wonderful dance performance, overflowing with lyricism, by a man wearing a chemise" (from Inner Material/Material, Tatsumi Hijikata DANCE EXPERIENCE programme**, 1960)***.
*In the programme, the kanji used for 'bloom' was the traditional form. This character was also used in Rilke's Anthology of Poems (translated by Toshihiko Katayama), published in 1946.
**Although Hijikata's text says it was 'autumn 1948', there is no record of any performances or guest appearances by Kazuo Ohno that year, and it is thought it refers to this 1949 recital.
