Kazuo Ohno Modern Dance Recital: The Old Man and the Sea | Daiichi Seimei Hall大野一雄モダン・ダンス公演 老人と海|第一生命ホール
Kazuo Ohno’s fifth modern dance recital, held in April 1959. In addition to a group work based on Ernest Hemingway’s ‘The Old Man and the Sea,’ the programme included the group piece ‘The Sun and Roofs’ and three short solo works by Kazuo Ohno. The group works featured Ohno’s eldest son Yukito and his second son Yoshito, while Tatsumi Hijikata served as stage manager for ‘The Old Man and the Sea.’
According to a draft of a letter written by Kazuo Ohno to Hemingway, the performance had originally been planned for November 23, 1958, but was postponed until April 1959 due to financial difficulties and because the works had not yet been completed. Various materials related to the recital survive, including the programme, the script for ‘The Old Man and the Sea,’ photographs, and audio recordings.
The programme also states that the performance was “dedicated to the late Naoe Inui.” Inui, who had passed away in January 1958, was a poet known for poetry collections including ‘Ribs and Butterflies’(1932).
One month after this recital, Tatsumi Hijikata presented ‘Forbidden Colours,’ featuring Yoshito Ohno as his co-performer.
