The Sun and Roofs太陽と屋根

A group piece presented at Kazuo Ohno Modern Dance Recital in April 1959.

From the programme:

Standing on the Jōban Line platform at Ueno Station at dawn, I sketch the faint breath that envelops the rows of houses in the downtown district. As far as the eye can reach, rooftops ripple along the horizon without a single gap—some clinging to the earth, others straining to break into the sky. A black cat trembles at the depth of the night’s abyss. A black sun clings to the boundary between night and day. Beneath the weight of suppressed emotions, coffins of raw wood and washbasins crack apart. Now morning returns once more, and a misshapen steam locomotive releases pitch-black laborers.
