My Motherわたしのお母さん

My Mother

Butoh solo by Kazuo Ohno. Premiered in 1981, directed by Tatsumi Hijikata. This work took on elements of Ozen (also known as Dream of a Fetus), which was performed as part of Ohno's Europe tour in 1980.

Kazuo Ohno often talked about his mother. His mother Midori was a modern woman who excelled at cooking European cuisine and playing the koto (Japanese harp). She also suffered agonies such as losing a young daughter. Her life and last words were part of the foundation of Kazuo Ohno's work, although his movements were quite abstract.

Although My Mother was rarely performed after 1983, it was recreated and performed in Yokohama under the direction of Yoshito Ohno in 1995, with some alterations to the the composition and a new final scene. It was performed again in 1998 at the same venue, when Kazuo Ohno was 91 years old.

The scenes from My Mother in Yokohama, 1995:
Dream of a Fetus
My Mother's Daydream
Dream of the Universe
My Mother's last words: a dance of flatfish
Dream of Love
