Ka-Cho-Fu-Getsu花鳥風月

Ka-Cho-Fu-Getsu

Also referred to as 'Flowers-Birds-Winds-Moon'. It premiered in May 1990, directed by Yoshito Ohno and commissioned by the Teatro Ponchielli, Cremona, Italy.
Cremona has a tradition of lute-making, and in response to the request to create a work associated with the lute, Kazuo along with Yoshito Ohno stayed in Cremona in December 1989 to carry out research on lute-making. Seeing the process of the craftsmen going into the forest, touching the trees, selecting their material and creating a lute without a blueprint reminded Kazuo of the Japanese perspective on nature, and so titled this piece Ka-Cho-Fu-Getsu (Flowers-Birds-Winds-Moon [traditional themes of natural beauty in Japanese aesthetics]), though the theme in this piece was related to 'people and nature' rather than flowers and birds.

The work made use of a lot of music and props. In the final scene, Japanese paper in many colours fall from above as Yoshito pulls along a piece of string with flags of all nations to the sound of fireworks. In another scene, Yoshito (who was on his high school football team) skillfully kicks a football around the stage while wearing a dress. As a commissioned piece, it had many elements and was motivated by a European production system.

Main scenes from the performance in Yokohama, 1995:
- Moonlight
- Is a Ghostly Horse Carriage a Messenger from Hades?
- Wingless Angels
- Dance with Crazy Halo
Between these scenes was inserted Yoshito Ohno's Butoh Holds Up The Foudation
