Ohno Etsuko on Portrait of Mr. O
Ohno Etsuko
Born in Yokohama in 1938. Graduated in Fine Art from Bunka Gakuin. After meeting Yoshito Ohno during junior high school, she married him in 1962. Assumed responsibility for Yoshito’s costumes in 1969 when he danced his first solo performance Yoshito Ohno DANCE EXPERIENCE. She later also became responsible for designing Kazuo Ohno’s costumes, as well as dressing him and doing his makeup, starting with Admiring La Argentina in 1977.
Portrait of Mr. O
A collaborative independent film by documentary film director Nagano Chiaki and butoh dancer Ohno Kazuo. This 16mm, 65 minute monochrome film was Ohno’s first foray into film, and was first made public in 1965. Ohno and Nagano subsequently went on to make Mandala of Mr. O (1971) and Mr. O’s Book of the Dead (1973), which formed a trilogy along with Portrait of Mr. O. Ohno Kazuo often stated that “everyday life is my dance teacher”, and Portrait of Mr. O is set very much in his “everyday life”, filmed around the Ohno family home in Hodogaya, Yokohama, as well as at his studio and in the boiler room of the school Ohno worked at at the time. The music was also performed by Ohno himself. The DVD is available for purchase at:
