La fleur éclôt en enfer, 2016
This piece was produced during a six month residency in France in 2016. While based at the National Choreographic Center of Rillieux-La-Pape (CCNR), and travelling around Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille and Le Havre, she conceptualised her work on Buddhist ritual, creating each of the 278 Hannya-Shingyo sutra characters out of Perler beads.
The performance held at Maison du Japon, part of the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris which attracts students and researchers from all over the world, was an interactive piece whereby audience members were invited to draw words onto Kawamura's body which she would then incorporate into her dance. This unprecedented performance made dynamic use of space from the Japanese garden to a hall decorated with paintings by Tsuguharu Foujita, transforming calm everyday spaces, arousing the audience and provoking controversy among the sell-out crowd.
