What is "bande dessinée (BD)"?
A graphic novel culture that has developed independently in the French-speaking world, primarily in France and Belgium. Known by its abbreviation "BD", in France it is called the ninth art, along with architecture, sculpture, painting, music, literature, drama, film and media arts. Hergé's "The Adventures of Tintin" is a world-famous bande dessinée masterpiece. It is typically formatted as a single story in A4, with a hard cover and in full colour, and often written for adults. Bande dessinée has its own culture and following, equivalent to Japanese manga and American comics.
