T.R.U. 2020-2021 Part Illusion: Tokyo Underground
This catalogue, published bilingually in Japanese and English, documents the butoh inspired festival 'TOKYO REAL UNDERGROUND', which was held between April and August 2021 as part of Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13, organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo. Initially planned to take place in Tokyo's underground spaces during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, most of the festival was re-designed as an online programme in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This book contains photographs and written details of the exhibitions, performances and talks that took place, along with essays and a glossary of terms created for the festival to provide an overall picture of the events that took place.

The book includes an updated version of Butoh Incidents, a well-received online exhibition tracing the history of butoh seen as 'incidents', which is published in the book in its entirety with all 49 illustrations, and accompanied by a previously unpublished essay "Post-Butoh and Beyond" by Norikoshi Takao.
Also included in the book is a fascinating new essay "Underground Spaces: The Foundation of Modern Tokyo" by Nakajima Naoto on the history of Tokyo's underground spaces, and photographs of several underground spaces around Tokyo we had originally planned to use for our events but in the end could not, what we might call the "part illusory" plans for the festival.
