Flower and Bird花と鳥

Flower and Bird

A solo piece by Yoshito Ohno, premiered in October 2013 at the Kazuo Ohno Festival 2013. At its premiere, it carried the subtitle 'A Letter to My Future Self.' Although Yoshito Ohno had previously performed works under the title 'Flower and Bird' in 1994 (Kushiro This Is) and 2004 (Takaoka Civic Hall), these are distinct from the 2013 work.

The 2013 'Flower and Bird' can be seen as a culminating work in which Yoshito Ohno fully embodies the teachings of Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. The piece was subsequently toured in Europe, Brazil, and China.

The title “Flower and Bird” is drawn from a line contributed by Tatsumi Hijikata to the programme of Yoshito Ohno’s solo performance in 1969: “His dance is flowers and birds.” Yoshito Ohno himself remarked, “I have given various titles to my works, but in the end, for me, there is only ‘flowers and birds.’” For Ohno, “flowers” evoke interiority and gentleness, while “birds” call forth the exterior and more intense emotions such as anger.

A detailed account of the premiere of 'Flower and Bird' can be found in Inuhiko Yomota’s 'Portrait of Ono Yoshito (2017, Canta Co., Ltd.).'
