Mandala of Mr.OO氏の曼陀羅

Mandala of Mr.O

Second in a trilogy of 16mm films made by documentary filmmaker Chiaki Nagano and Kazuo Ohno, released in black and white in 1971, and running at 120min. ‘Mr O’ refers to Kazuo Ohno. Three of Kazuo’s students also appear in the film.
According to an interview with Chiaki Nagano, this film was intended to reflect the inner life of Kazuo Ohno even more so than the first. Filmed in locations such as the Kashozan mountain in Numata (Gunma prefecture) and the uninhabited island of Sarushima in Tokyo Bay, Nagano filmed Kazuo as he danced taking inspiration from his surroundings, and then edited the film together as a mandala of Kazuo Ohno’s world.

The programme was put together by Koichi Tanikawa, with contributions from Simon Yotsuya, Ikuya Katō, Tatsumi Hijikata and others. According to the programme's subtitle, 'This is a story of the cruel and gentle dreams and memories of a house in Japan'.
