Tendō Chidō天道 地道

Tendō Chidō

Also referred to as 'The Road in Heaven, The Road in Earth'. It was first performed in Room 623, Sixth Building of Keio University's Hiyoshi Campus in 1995 as part of a welcome event for new students. Although at the time there was no intention of performing it in larger theatres, it was later revised and performed in Japan and abroad.
Kazuo Ohno was deeply moved by Shohaku Soga, an Edo era artist, and although he had danced pieces inspired Soga's paintings in earlier works, the imagery of his paintings was particularly strong in Tendō Chidō.
Originally, the stage was left deliberately empty, with bare walls and floor. From 1997, one of Kazuo's students Joan Soler from Spain took part in the work as a black, rock-like mass set on stage from the theatre opened.

Main scenes (based on the 1997 performance in Ferrara)
- Spring
- The Body of Universe
- Setsugekka (Snow-Moon-Flower)
- On anniversary of my father's death, I cross a bridge amidst irises (Haiku poem by Koi Nagata)
