White Lotus | TOKYO FM Hall

Held at the TOKYO FM Hall from February to March 1992, “TOKYO DANCE SCENERY” (organized, planned, and produced by TOKYO FM and An Creative Inc.) introduced seven dance performances described as ’the most noteworthy dance performances of the 1990s’, one of which was Kazuo Ohno’s “White Lotus”. Other participants in the event included Kuniko Kisanuki, Sumie Yonei, and Man Uno.

Although the flyer described the performance as Kazuo Ohno’s solo work collection, Yoshito Ohno and Haruna Miyake also appeared in the performance.

Haruna Miyake, who composed and performed the music, later reflected in her essay ‘The Style of Condensation: The Dance of Kazuo Ohno’ (Gendaishi Techo, June 1992) on the various musical approaches she experimented with during the performance:

‘I experimented with ways of playing in which space suddenly seemed to come to a standstill, with sounds descending vertically yet never remaining still, and with time contracting only to expand again. Yet this dancer moved ahead, fell behind, and coexisted so happily within the sounds, spending the time of life there. As I played the piano, I thought that I would probably never again encounter such a strange dancer.’
