The Dead Sea | Yurakucho Asahi Hall (Premiere)

The Premiere of The Dead Sea- Viennese Waltz And Ghosts directed by Tatsumi Hijikata. It is performed as a part of Butoh Festival '85: Collected Records of Butoh Confessions—Seven Persons’ Seasons and Castles.

Inspired by the experiences in Israel in March, 1983, Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno created The Dead Sea spending a year of 1984 when they didn't have any tour abroad. As early as May 1983, when Kazuo performed at a Jazz Restaurant This Is in Kushiro, Hokkaido, the seeds of The Dead Sea were already seen.

Yoshito Ohno, who hadn't been on stage since 1969, came back to perform in this occasion. He had supported Kazuo all along, sometimes as a production manager, or as a music operator, or a tour manager. In 1983, when he did music operation during Kazuo's performance in Israel, some person came to him to say "You, too, were dancing today". Yoshito recalled this remark encouraged him to perform again. Tatsumi Hijikata choreographed Yoshito three pieces, and during this performance Yoshito's role was an unknown being who appears and disappears.

Koichi Iijima, a poet, reviewed this performance in Tokyo Shimbun (15 Februray 1985) as: Kazuo Ohno naturally (I wonder if it's the case) realized a miracle that he became simultaneously a king and a beggar, an old woman and a young girl.
