Dance Archive Project 2017 in Sapporo
Dance Archive Project 2017 presents two contrasting pieces in Sapporo. Yoshito Ohno performs “Flower and Bird” as an active butoh dancer at his age of 79 years old since his appearance in the first-ever butoh performance “Forbidden Colour” in 1959. Takao Kawaguchi, who has never seen Kazuo Ohno’s butoh performance in person, performs “About Kazuo Ohno” which was created by researching the archival materials. When nobody really reaches the answer to the question, “What is butoh?,” this will be a rare opportunity to witness “butoh” from inside and outside.
Yoshito Ohno
Born in Tokyo in 1938, Yoshito Ohno co-performed with Tatsumi Hijikata in “Forbidden Colours” in 1959. Throughout the 1960s he was active in butoh performances and stopped appearing on stage in 1969. His comeback was in 1985 when he co-performed “The Dead Sea” with Kazuo Ohno; thereafter he continued to direct all of Kazuo’s stage performances. His collaborative pieces include “The Promising Morning” (2010) with Julia Anne Stanzak and Eddie Martinez of the Tanztheater Wuppertal and “Antony and the Ohnos” (2010) with Antony and the Johnsons. His solo work “Flower and Bird” has been performed in Japan, Europe, Brazil, China since its premiere in 2013. Author of “Kazuo Ohno: Food for the Soul” (Film Art Sha, 1999) and “Butoh: A Way of Life” (Canta Co.Ltd, 2015). A new book “Portrait of Ono Yoshito” written by Inuhiko Yomota is published this September.
Takao Kawaguchi
While joining the Japanese multimedia performance company Dumb Type from 1996 to 2008, Kawaguchi started his solo performance in 2000. His recent pieces include: “DiQueNoVes (Say You Don't See)” (2003), “D.D.D.- How Many Times Will My Heart Beat Before It Stops?” (2004), “Good Luck” (2008) and “TABLEMIND” (2011). He also worked on Butoh-related pieces such as: “The Ailing Dance Mistress– based on the texts of Tatsumi Hijikata” (2012), and “About Kazuo Ohno” (2013). He is active in various filed, such as being the director of the Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival from 1996 to 1999.
